Walter McCarthy Honored For Founding McCarthy-Martin Endowed Scholarship to USF

June 3, 2004

A special luncheon was held today (June 3, 2004) to honor Walter McCarthy and the late Dennis Martin who together started an endowed athletic scholarship at USF to thank the University for granting them athletic aid in the 1930's.

The scholarship also acknowledges outstanding players and teams of the 1920's and 1930's who won championships and earned individual honors; citing the 1929 Pacific Coast Champions, led by All-American Ray Maloney, coached by Jimmy Needles, later the first coach of the U.S.A. Olympic Team. This successful era established the University of San Francisco as a Pacific Coast power and national contender.
