University of San Francisco Sports Medicine

This site is devoted to the staff, student-athletes, parents, and alumni at USF Sports Medicine. The USF Sports Medicine staff includes three full-time athletic trainers and three graduate assistant athletic trainers. The staff also includes five team physicians and athletic training students. Our goal is to deliver the highest level of care to the student-athletes at the University of San Francisco, utilizing the most advanced, research-based modalities and rehabilitation as well as evaluation techniques available in the realm of sports medicine. Every effort will be made to ensure an optimum state of physical and emotional health, preparing each athlete to excel in the collegiate sports arena. We will also strive to become a recognized authority in clinical athletic training techniques and education through a variety of multimedia outlets, promoting the University and its Athletic Training staff.

Athletic Training Student Education Program

The Athletic Training Student Education Program is available to any USF student who has interest in the health sciences to the clinical aspects of physical therapy, general orthopedics, and emergency medicine as practiced in the collegiate athletic training environment. Interested students may apply to the program by filling out an application form. The program usually consists of 12 to 17 students. Once a student is accepted, he/she is required to put in hours in athletic training room as well as game events. Also, a weekly in-service class is provided throughout a semester with appropriate topics for each level of the students. In addition, the staff will strive to help the students learn and mature as professionals, learning skills vital to success in any medical field.

If you are interested in becoming an athletic training student, please e-mail Head Athletic Trainer Ron Shinault at rshinault@usfca.edu with the subject "Athletic Training Student Education Program".
