TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Running in extreme weather conditions that included howling wind, mid 30s temperatures and a muddy course, sophomore Eric Causey took part in the NCAA Cross Country National Championships at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center Saturday.
The sophomore from Encinitas, Calif., finished the 10,000 meter course in 31:24.4 to take 111th out of 256 runners. He was the 19th man racing as an individual to cross the finish line.
"Eric got out and positioned himself well in the first half of the race, but just wasn't able to hold onto it the deeper he got in the race," coach Helen Lehman-Winters said. "He was super tough, and he got some valuable experience today that will help in the future."
At the first split at 3,000 meters, Causey got out in the lead pack, clocking in at 46th. By the midpoint of the race, he had moved down to 64th before his eventual finish at 111th. Generally known as a sport in which age and experience is a key, Causey was the 28th underclassmen to complete the course in cold and blustery conditions.
The race was won by Oregon freshman phenom Ed Cheserek, who bested Texas Tech's Kennedy Kithuka for the individual title. Cheserek passed Kithuka in the final 2,000 meters of the race to claim victory in 29:41.1. Previous to Sauturday, Kithuka – the 2012 individual champion – was undefeated in NCAA Division I competition.
The team title was taken by Colorado, who finished with 149 points, with Northern Arizona and 2012 champions Oklahoma State also finding the podium. Fellow West Coast Conference competitor BYU placed fourth with Portland earning seventh at the meet.
Causey stands as the first male in USF program history to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country National Championships. He was picked as one of 38 individual selections, earning one of two at-large berths in the championships.
"I could not think of a better person to be our first male qualifier," Lehman-Winters said. "We've had talented males in our program over the past couple years, and we've had several that have been scratching right at the surface in terms of competing and getting to the NCAA Championships. For us to be represented at that level on the men's side is an important step in the development of our program, and Eric is going to be a big-time competitor."
