SEATTLE, Wash. – For the second meet in a row, the San Francisco women's track team has taken Seattle by storm, setting new school and personal bests at the Husky Classic at Dempsey Indoor.

The weekend started with newcomer Jana Soethout smashing a school record in the 5,000 meters on Friday night.

“I am very pleased with how Jana performed. She was very impressive and ran solo from 800 meters and posted a personal record and easy win,” head coach Helen Lehman-Winters said. “These performances are great early season reads as we approach the outdoor season.”

A junior from Cologne, Germany, running her first competitive race for the Dons, Soethout began her time in Green and Gold by finishing 5,000 m in 6:11.78 to set a new school record for the Dons. The previous record, set last season by Laura Suur, was bested by more than 12 seconds en route to Southout's win in her heat of the race. Of the four open sections, Soethout's time proved to be the best of the night.

Fellow USF competitor Alice Baker ran the 5,000 m in 16:48.18 to finish her section in eighth place and 25th overall out of 84 competitors in the open heats. For Baker, a redshirt junior from Oakland, Calif., this sets a new personal best at this distance.

Following the stellar results on Friday, Sophie Curl topped her invite section of the 3,000 meter run, finishing the race in 9:27.59, another personal best for a USF runner.

"Sophie was outstanding in her race execution this afternoon," Lehman-Winters said at the conclusion of the Husky Classic. " She was patient in her positioning and very competitive in the last phase of the race."

Kate Jamboretz turned in a time of 2:15.12 in the 800 m, in her first time to run this distance at the collegiate level. She finished with the second-fastest time in her section, and the 26th overall time in the open competition.

The next indoor track event for the Dons is a trio of Last Chance Qualifiers taking place across the country on March 2. Outdoor track competition begins Feb. 16, with the Cal All Comers Meet in Berkeley, Calif.
