SAN FRANCISCO – University of San Francisco women's basketball signee Hashima Carothers was named girls basketball player of the year by the Daily News, as announced recently.

“I'm really happy for Hashima,” USF coach Jennifer Azzi said. “I think she's improved a lot in the last couple years that we've been watching her, and to be a post player, she's got the skill set of a guard. I think her versatility is going to be huge for us.

“I love her mindset – she's a winner, she's a worker, and she's the type that will be willing to do whatever it takes for us to be successful.”

Carothers averaged 16.3 points and 11.1 rebounds her senior season for Eastside Prep in East Palo Alto, Calif. She was also named West Bay Athletic League Foothill Division MVP for her efforts on the court after the Panthers won the WBAL tournament championship.

Averaging a double-double her senior season, she leaves Eastside Prep with a career average of 11.2 rebounds per game after being a four-year starter for the Panthers.

High school coach Donovan Blythe told the Palo Alto Daily News, "She's an unbelievable human being. She's loved all over the school by teachers and her peers. Put it this way, she won't be a high-maintenance kid at the University of San Francisco. And she's a great student, too."

Carothers is one of three women already inked to play college basketball for the Dons. Joining her is Kalyn Simon, from Archbishop Mitty in San Jose, Calif. Claudia Price, Texas District 10-4A Most Valuable Player and McDonald's All-American nominee from Mesquite, Texas, will also be joining the USF program in the fall of 2013.
