SAN FRANCISCO -- University of San Francisco men's head basketball coach Rex Walters has announced Corey Hilliard, a 6-1 guard currently enrolled at Midland (Texas) College, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at USF.
A native of Kansas City, Mo., Hilliard will have two years of eligibility remaining.
“We are really excited to have Corey join our team next year,” said Walters. “Corey can not only score the ball but is a player who combines speed and strength to get in the paint and make plays. He can play both the point and shooting guard and can really guard the ball.
“Our team got better this week with the addition of Corey Hilliard and Kruize Pinkins. I am looking forward to getting to work with both of these players and prepare our team for the 2013-14 season.”
Hilliard averaged 8.0 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 15 games last season at Midland College, helping the Chaparrals to a 19-8 overall record. He scored a season-high 22 points against New Mexico Military Institute on Feb. 21, one of his six double-figure scoring games on the season.
Hilliard began his collegiate career at the University of Nebraska, where he appeared in 12 games for the Cornhuskers in the 2011-12 season. He averaged 0.8 points and 0.4 rebounds in a total of 51 minutes of playing time.
Hilliard attended Raytown (Mo.) South High School where he was a two-time all-state selection. A three-year starter, he averaged 17.4 points, 3.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.8 steals a game in helping the Cardinals to a 20-6 mark. He was named a second team all-state selection by the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, despite missing a month of the season. Hilliard racked up six 20-point games as a senior, including a season-high 27-point night against Fort Osage.
He was named district MVP as a junior after averaging 15.0 points, 4.5 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.7 steals a game.
