AUSTIN, Texas – Steven Garboden advanced to the quarterfinals in the 1,500 meters after a lunging finish earned him an automatic qualifying spot at Mike A. Myers Stadium Thursday night.
The senior from North Bend, Ore., finished Heat 1 of the NCAA Preliminary Championships in 3:47.97 to take fifth. Garboden, the current USF school record holder in this event, edged out his closest competitor, Marcus Dickson of BYU, by six one-hundredths of a second. Garboden will take to the track in the quarterfinals Saturday at 4:45 p.m. PT, as he chases his second-consecutive trip to the NCAA Finals.
Two Dons ran in the 10,000 meter semifinals. Jose Madera, a junior from Anaheim, Calif., paced the tandem with a time of 31:12.56 to finish 27th. Eric Causey placed 34th, clocking in at 31:36.96. The freshman from Encinitas, Calif., concludes his first collegiate track season after amassing school records in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meter distances.
Both men started strong before fading in the later stages of the race in extremely hot and humid south Texas weather.
