MONTEREY, Calif. -- Cory McElyea defeated former Fresno State standout Danny Paniccia 4 & 2 on Wednesday in the first round of the match play portion of the 102nd California State Amateur being contested at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club.
McElyea advances to the Round of 16, where he will face Mac McClung of Saint Mary's beginning at 8:15 a.m. on Thursday.
The California Amateur Championship is one of the nation's oldest state amateur golf championships and dates back to 1912 when the California Golf Association was founded. Former champions include Ken Venturi, Johnny Miller, Bobby Clampett, Duffy Waldorf and Mark O'Meara.
