STANFORD, Calif – USF's Bernardo Saraiva and Nils Skajaa continued their winning streak in the double's open for the 2014 USTA ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Stanford University as they took home the championship title.
"I am so proud of the way Bernardo and Nils never gave up in their matches," said Head Coach Pablo Pires de Almeida. "They played against some of the nations best doubles teams and had to overcome a lot of ups and downs in order to get the trophy. This is a huge win for our program and it really proves that as a staff and athletic department we are creating a higher standard. A win like this makes you thankful for all the long days of hard work and exercises that we have been through before this experience."
As the No. 5 seed in the bracket for the Green and Gold, Saraiva and Skajaa dominated to nab their finals match in a competitive three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (6), against the No. 3 seed of the tournament, Andre Goransson and Oskar Wikberg of California.
This is the first USTA ITA Northwest Regionals Championship for the Dons in modern history. Saraiva and Skajaa's win solidified their place in the USTA ITA National Indoor Championships.
The duo not only broke the program 's record of doubles finalist, but also the record of their head coach, Pires de Almeida when he advanced to the finals at the Southern Regional with his partner Jorgen Arnesen for USF. The Southern Regional is the Southern California version of this tournament.
"This was a big moment for the program and we are proud of Bernardo and Nils for putting in a great tournament," said Director of Tennis, Peter Bartlett. "Three years ago when we paired them together for the first time we had a good feeling that if we could teach them more about the game of doubles and put them in front of great competition that they would take full advantage of the opportunities. They certainly accomplished that today with this big win and we look forward to taking them back to New York to the National Indoors and put them up against some more great competition."
Saraiva and Skajaa will play in the National Indoor Championships on November 4 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
