With the largest single gift ever made to Dons athletics, Tom and Sharon Malloy will transform the future of the University of San Francisco for generations to come.

Malloy, '61, and his wife, Sharon have pledged a $5 million facilities gift to support USF's legendary basketball program as part of a planned athletics capital campaign. The athletics effort is part of a university-wide comprehensive campaign currently in its quiet phase.

"This gift is a reflection of the tremendous vision and passion that Tom and Sharon have for USF," said President Paul J. Fitzgerald, S.J. "They understand the role that athletics has played in building USF's spirit and our reputation for excellence. We are grateful for their commitment to USF and for their leadership in creating a model of philanthropy for others."

Starting with Tom Malloy, three generations of the family have graduated from USF. Malloy, who is serving his second term as chairman of the University's Board of Trustees, and his wife have long been generous donors to multiple programs, including the undergraduate School of Management housed in Malloy Hall, the John Lo Schiavo Center for Science and Innovation, and to student scholarships.

"This gift is a demonstration of my commitment to a university that has made a huge difference in my life, in my son's life and in my grand-daughter's life," said Malloy. "I'm very proud to be a USF alumnus.  Sharon and I are extremely pleased to support an effort that we know will change the lives of students for generations to come."

Peter Wilch, vice president of development, said private philanthropic support continues to play a critical role in making USF an exceptional educational institution.

"Tom and Sharon's philanthropy has already made a big impact on the university," Wilch said. "They have provided financial support for students in numerous programs who would not otherwise be able to attend USF. Their philanthropic leadership and Tom's guidance as the chairman of our Board of Trustees will continue to inspire others to give back."

The Malloy's pledge will support significant improvements to our basketball center, including the transformation of War Memorial Gymnasium and planned improvements to USF's baseball facilities.

"The gift from Tom and Sharon is an extraordinary investment in the future of Dons Athletics," said USF Athletics Director Scott Sidwell. "Basketball has a rich tradition at USF, and this gift will provide the foundation on which to build up the strength of that tradition. It will allow us to continue to aim higher and support a program that affords students the opportunity to excel in the classroom, win at the highest levels of competition, engage in the community, and become future leaders in all aspects of their lives."

Malloy joined his father's small underground construction business several years after graduating with a degree in finance. He grew the business, establishing the Tom Malloy Corporation as a general engineering   contractor, and later, Trench Shoring Company, with offices in two states. He also serves as chairman of Republic Bank, Inc., which specializes in leasing equipment to hospitals.

Married for 54 years, the Malloys have four children and nine grandchildren. Their son Kevin graduated from USF in 1985 and, like his parents, has been a generous donor to the university. In May 2013, their grand-daughter Brenna joined the ranks of Malloys with a degree from USF.
