SAN FRANCISCO ––Â
The USF men's and women's tennis teams will host the prestigious Battle in the Bay Classic beginning on Thursday, Sept. 17 at the California Tennis Club (CTC). For the first time in tournament history, the Classic will be co-ed, with men's and women's singles and doubles matches scheduled over the course of the weekend. Matches will start on Thursday afternoon with women's singles at 4:00 PM and will run through Sunday morning when men's singles and doubles finals will take place. Admission is free and open to the public during this weekend's action and fans are encouraged to attend and support the Dons at their marquee event.Â
The Dons will be joined in the field by some of the top tennis programs around the country including Southern California, Stanford, California and San Diego.
"It's going to be a strong field of players," said head men's tennis coach Pablo Pires de Almeida. "It's going to be the best college tournament in the country during this time period."
Representing USF on the men's side will be seniors Nils Skajaa, Vasco Valverde and Thomas Takemoto as well as freshman Ryan Marker. Skajaa and Takemoto will pair up for doubles, with Valverde and Marker teaming up as well.
"Our event is so great because you have so much support," Pires de Almeida said. "Every match they play, they're not alone because so many people are watching them. You feel like you're playing a professional tournament."
Competing for the women will be senior Andrea Ka, juniors Thyra Taune and Genevieve McCloskey and freshmen Shanna Dos Santos and Hanna Börjeson. Ka will play alongside Taune for doubles with Börjeson and McCloskey making up the other team. Dos Santos will join Rianna Valdes of USC in doubles as well.
Three Dons will open up singles play on Thursday at 4:00 PM, with Taune facing off against San Jose State'e Marie Klocker. Dos Santos will square off against Karla Popovic of California, with McCloskey set to play USC's Alex Letzt. At 5:00 PM, Ka will play Dzina Milovanovic of Pepperdine, with Borjeson playing against USC's Valdes at the same time.Â
"We have two very experienced players in Andrea and Thyra so it's an opportunity for them to play against great competition," said head women's tennis coach Hilary Somers. "For our new players, it's a chance to get a feel of good college tennis. We're really looking forward to this home event."
In 2014's Battle in the Bay Classic, Nick Crystal of USC took home the singles championship and the double's title with his teammate Connor Farren.Â
