Souley Boum, a two-time Oakland Athletic League Player of the Year from Oakland Technical High School, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at the University of San Francisco.
Â
Boum, a 6-3 combo guard, averaged 21.2 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game last season for Oakland Tech. He also shot 53 percent from the floor and 49 percent from three-point range for the Bulldogs which finished with a 28-4 overall record last season and went undefeated in the OAL with a 10-0 mark.
Â
Boum earned OAL Player of the Year honors as a sophomore and junior.
Â
He also averaged 20.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals a game last summer for AAU's Team Lillard. He was the fifth-leading scorer in the 64-team adidas Uprising Summer Circuit.
Â
"We are thrilled that Souley Boum has selected USF," said head coach
Kyle Smith. "He is someone we identified early in the recruiting process and felt he would be an important asset because of his natural abilities and the fact he had a strong desire to stay close to home and represent the Bay Area.
Â
"He is a playmaking guard who can easily play both back court spots in our offense. Â He has natural scoring instincts, but he can also defend and distribute the ball as well. Â Being a two-time player of the year from the OAL was very significant for us. Â We want to reestablish USF's prominence in the East Bay and Souley has certainly helped the cause with his signing. The OAL has produced NBA players such as Bill Russell and Joe Ellis who developed their skills and honed their character here on the Hilltop. Â There is a strong history and a great relationship that we are excited to reestablish in the community."
Â
USF opens the 2016-17 season this Friday night against Illinois-Chicago. Tip-off is at 8:00 p.m. and the game will be preceded by the USF-Sacramento State women's game which gets underway at 6:00 p.m. Both games mark the USF coaching debuts of
