Zhane Dikes, senior point guard for the San Francisco women's basketball team, picked up National Jesuit Player of the Week honors, as announced today by
Jesuit Basketball Spotlight.
Dikes helped lead the Dons to a 2-0 showing on the week, including a decisive 71-52 victory over Jesuit and conference rival Gonzaga on Saturday. In the contest against the Bulldogs, she scored a game-high 20 points, including a 9-of-12 effort from the free throw line, and added eight rebounds and five assists.
Defensively, Dikes helped stifle Gonzaga's backcourt, holding the starting duo of Georgia Stirton and Emma Stach scoreless and assistless in the first half of play. The dominating victory over the Bulldogs was the first win in the series in 22 tries, snapping a streak that dated back to March 2, 2006.
The Las Vegas native averaged team highs of 17.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, along with contributing seven total assists in the first home sweep over their Pacific Northwest foes since the 1995-96 season. In USF's Thursday victory over Portland, Dikes expanded on her school record of most minutes played in a USF basketball career – male or female – with a team high 15 points on 62.5 percent shooting and eight rebounds.
While Dikes spearheaded the attack against Portland and Gonzaga, the team turned in a balanced effort with
Anna Seilund (13.5 ppg, 8-of-13 3FG) and
Taylor Proctor (13.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 4.5 apg) rounding out a trio of double-digit scorers. The Dons finished the weekend shooting 44.9 percent from the floor and a sweltering 54.8 percent from 3-point range, averaging 80.5 points per game, 20 more than each of its two opponents.
USF now sports a 14-8 record on the season, and hosts fellow Jesuit institution Santa Clara tonight at 7 p.m.
