COMPLETE NCAA BRACKETSAN FRANCISCO – After knocking off the Nos. 1, 2, and 3 teams in the West Coast Conference, the San Francisco women's basketball team was rewarded for their efforts with a No. 13 seed in the Lexington Region, and a first-round date with No. 4 Stanford at Maples Pavilion. The Dons and the Cardinal face of Saturday at 6 p.m. PT, on ESPN2.
Stanford, ranked No. 13 in the AP Top 25 and 16 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, enters the Big Dance with a record of 24-7, and a mark of 14-4 in the Pac-12. The Cardinal made an early exit in the league tournament, falling to Washington 73-65 in the quarterfinals.
The Dons and the Cardinal shared two common opponents this season – Gonzaga at Santa Clara. USF split the season series with the Bulldogs, and Stanford earned a decisive 17-point win in Spokane. The Cardinal fell to Santa Clara 61-58 at Maples Pavilion, and the Dons dropped both games against the Broncos despite holding a fourth-quarter lead. USF and Stanford have met once in the
Jennifer Azzi era, a, 100-45 loss to the eighth-ranked Cardinal on Dec. 22, 2010.
The Dons' last victory over a foe in the Top 25 was when the Dons upended No. 23 BYU in Provo, on Feb. 16, 2012, during head coach
Jennifer Azzi's second season at USF.
The trip down Highway 101 to Stanford is the closest post-season venue the Dons have ever enjoyed. For Azzi, the venue is one of familiarity, as the All-American point guard helped lead the Cardinal to the 1990 national championship as part of head coach Tara VanDerveer's first full recruiting class.
In its first NCAA tournament appearance, the No. 11-seeded Dons took on Arkansas in Seattle, Wash. In its last trip to the NCAAs, the Dons faced off with Southern Cal in Gainesville, Fla., where USF was also seeded 11th in their region. Sandwiched in between is the most prolific season in program history. As the No. 12 seed in 1996, USF traveled to Durham, N.C., and dispatched No. 16 Florida in the opening round of the tournament. Then, the Dons upended No. 13 Duke on their home court to advance to the Sweet 16.
