Spokane, Wash. –– The USF men's tennis suffered a tough loss on Saturday, falling to Gonzaga 4-1 in Spokane, Wash.
Christian Brockstedt was the lone bright spot for the Dons, winning both his singles and doubles matches against the Bulldogs.
Brockstedt and
Thomas Takemoto earned a quick, 6-2 win over Emilio Moreno and Ruadhan O'Sullivan on the No. 2 doubles court to start things off for USF. However, Gonzaga's Hayden Smith and Jordan Smith beat seniors
Nils Skajaa and
Vasco Valverde, 6-4, to draw even. With the doubles point on the line,
Jason Lee and
Ryan Marker battled hard on the No. 3 court, but lost in a nailbiter to Vicente Varas and Ronzai Saurombe by a score of 7-6(7-4)
The Bulldogs kept things going on the singles side, with Jordan Smith taking down Skajaa 6-4, 6-2 in straight sets. Hayden Smith pushed Gonzaga's lead to 3-0, with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Valverde. Down 3-0, Brockstedt earned his first singles win of 2016, beating Saurombe 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to keep the Green and Gold alive.
On the No. 2 court, the Dons had a great shot to earn a victory, as Marker took the first set 7-6(7-2) and was up 5-0 in the second set. However, O'Sullivan won the final 13 games to get the come-from-behind win and hand the Dons their second loss in two days.
USF will return home next weekend to face San Diego on April 8 and BYU on April 9. Both matches will begin at 1 P.M., with Friday's match taking place at the Olympic Club and Sunday's at the California Tennis Club.
