SAN FRANCISCO – Third-year men's soccer head coach
Eddie Soto announced his 2016 recruiting class on Thursday. The class consists of nine student-athletes, including seven freshmen and a pair of transfers with Division I experience.
"As we look to challenge for a WCC championship all these young men will get the opportunity to compete day in day out for the chance to help us strive for our goals," said Soto. "Our philosophy is simple. The best players play and this class will be eager to come in and stamp their mark within this team as we continue to make strides."
Â
Soto and the Dons are looking to supplement a roster largely intact from last season after losing only two seniors. 10 of the 11 starters return this year for Soto's squad – including seven returning all-conference honorees - while the incoming class is sure to provide great depth in all facets. Â
Â
"We have strengthened our midfield as well as our front line to help us continue to play a brand of soccer that's possession oriented but also dynamic around the final third," added Soto. "We also have a young crop of defenders who will get an opportunity to be around a very experienced group to help them transition into Division I soccer.
Â
"Finally in goal we will have something I haven't had in two seasons and that's four keepers. With the addition of two young talented keepers it will definitely create an environment that we have been missing.
Â
"As we prepare for what will be another competitive schedule, our depth was very important for this recruiting class. We are very excited for this group to join our Dons family but now it's important that these young men come fit, ready and hungry to earn respect from their peers and staff come August."
Â
The Dons open the regular season on the road at Nebraska Omaha on Aug. 26.
