Henry Chung claimed medalist honors at a U.S. Amateur qualifier held at the Sonoma Golf Club on Monday with a 6-under 36-hole score of 136 to earn a spot in the world's most prestigious amateur golf event which will be held August 15-20 at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
Chung's first round 66 included an eagle on the par-5 second hole and seven birdies, including three straight to close the round. His four birdies in the second round were enough to offset one double bogey and claim a one-stroke victory over Bryan Baumgarten of Granite Bay, who plays collegiately at Illinois. Former San Jose State standout and Dublin native Taylor Bromley (138) also advanced to Oakland Hills from the Sonoma qualifier.
The 116th U.S. Amateur Championship will get underway on August 15 with 36 holes of stroke play on Oakland Hills' North and South Courses. The top 64 players in the field of 312 will advance to the match play portion of the event. The 36-hole final will take place Sunday, August 21 on Oakland Hills' famed South Course.
First contested in 1895 at Newport (R.I.) Golf Club, the U.S. Amateur is the USGA's oldest championship. Bryson DeChambeau captured last year's event at Olympia Fields Country Club, becoming the fifth player to win the U.S. Amateur and NCAA individual championships in the same year.
USF women's player Vanessa Ha will also be competing in the U.S. Women's Amateur, August 1-7 at the Roling Hills Golf Club in Springfield, Pa.
