SAN FRANCISCO – The Dons are ready to Battle.

In their premier fall tennis tournament of the year, the San Francisco men and women are at the ready to take the courts at the eighth annual Battle in the Bay Classic at the California Tennis Club Sept. 22-25.

The Dons begin competition at the oldest private tennis club west of the Mississippi on Thursday, Sept. 22, as four women suit up in singles competition. Sophomore Shanna Dos Santos will be the lone returning USF woman to compete in the singles bracket, joined by a trio of newcomers in Joselyn Treyes Albarracin and true freshmen Anna Sokiran and Emily Maxfield. Dons' netter Genevieve McCloskey, a senior from Perth, Australia, joins the action in doubles play on Friday teaming up with Treyes Albarracin.  This will be the season-opener for the women.

The 2016 Battle in the Bay will be the second season to feature both men's and women's players, and this season's women's winner will earn a wildcard entry into the $50,000 Stockton Challenger next summer.

The men begin play at the Cal Club on Friday battling for a wildcard position into the $100,000 Tiburon Challenger. Five Dons dot the singles draw. Three men new to the squad in 2016 – Oliver Poysti, Paul Giraud and Johan Joenhagen – join returning players Ryan Marker and Woravin Kumthonkittikul. Marker is coming off a season-opening weekend at the Silverado Invitational where he won the A flight in the singles draw.

Joining the squad in doubles play is senior Christian Brockstedt, who will suit up alongside Giraud. Marker and Joenhagen, undefeated as a duo on the year, face off against the pairing of Joel William Gamerov and Joshua Page from San Diego looking to advance to meet the top-seeded team in the tournament – Cal Poly's Ben Donovan and Corey Pang.

New this year, a live video stream will capture the action from court one, brought to you in conjunction with our partners at Campus Insiders and theW.tv. Along with three days of tennis, other events on the weekend include an Alumni Event and USF Tennis' annual Kids Day with community partner Harper for Kids. Fans and spectators are encouraged to attend the action at the Cal Club, and admission is free and open to the public.
