USF - University of San Francisco or You Stay Forever? What is it about our school that creates such great passion and devotion from its sons and daughters?
The University of San Francisco Tuesday Testimonials tell that story in the words of the special men and women who make the Hilltop such an amazing place.
If you've ever watched a highlight reel of University of San Francisco Women's Basketball in the last two decades, you've heard the voice of the Dons,
George Devine. Now in his 21st season of calling games for USF, Devine is a proud alumni of the University – third generation, in fact.
Devine became coming to games on the Hilltop when he was five, seeing Legends of the Hilltop Bill Cartwright and Mary Hile-Nepfel take the court, and later become some of the most recognizable faces regularly dotting the crowd at men's and women's games in War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
Along with listening to Devine on home broadcasts on theW.tv and in audio programs from around the West Coast Conference and beyond, he is a regular contributing broadcaster for the WCC's digital network for multiple sports, championships and events.
In all his travels covering the Dons, it's close to home when one of the distinctive qualities about USF is readily apparent.
"I think what makes USF special is it's part of the fabric of San Francisco," he notes. "It's very hard to go someplace in San Francisco and not run into somebody who has a USF connection, or a connection to one of the institutions that's been a part of the great USF family.
"I'm talking about Lone Mountain College which became San Francisco College for Women, I'm talking about Saint Ignatius High School, I'm talking about the old Presentation High School, I'm talking about the Law School – somebody's got a connection to this campus."
Although Devine will miss the next women's game, instead being tapped for the call of the Pepperdine vs. Pacific men's basketball broadcast in theW.tv on Thursday, Devine is a staple on the sidelines throughout the season. You can find him perched across from the USF bench with a bevy of audio bells and whistles alongside him on the media table, ready to relay the great calls from courtside. He will return to his regular post yet again on the road in Stockton on Saturday, as the women take on the Tigers from the Spanos Center.
