SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The San Francisco women's tennis team dropped its season opener on Friday afternoon at the Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center, running into a Sacramento State squad clicking on all cylinders.

USF (0-1) was upended by the Hornets (1-0) in sweeping fashion, leaving the Dons hungry for their first point of the regular season. Despite the lopsided final score, three of USF's singles matches were played to the fullest, with the Dons' Nos. 2, 3 and 4 players forcing a third set.

Playing from the second position, Emily Maxfield took the first set from Karina Vyrlan before her opponent took wins in the final two frames to earn the point. No. 3 Don, senior Genevieve McCloskey, and USF's No. 4 player Margarita Treyes both rallied from first-set defeats to knot the scores in their respective matches in the second. Unfortunately for the Green and Gold, the Hornets got the better of the third set on each occasion.

The Dons' best shot at a doubles victory came at the No. 1 position, where McCloskey and Maxfield paired up to take on Vyrlan and Ana Loaiza Esquivias. The Hornet duo edged out USF's top pair, 7-5, to maintain a clean sheet on the day.

USF has eight days away from competition before their next match, a road test against UC Davis on Jan. 29.
