USF will enter the West Coast Conference Championships as the fifth-seed and will face fourth-seeded Santa Clara in a quarterfinal match-up on Saturday, March 4. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. from the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.Â
The game will be televised by Spectrum SportsNet, available in the Bay Area on CSNBA, and nationally by BYU.tv. The game will also be streamed on The W.tv.
Â
The Dons (20-11, 10-8 WCC) and Broncos (16-15, 10-8) tied for fourth place in the WCC standings but Santa Clara earned the fourth-seed by virtue of its 76-68 win over BYU on Jan. 26. The winner of the USF-Santa Clara game will advance to Monday's semifinals at either 6 or 8:30 p.m.
Â
Under first-year head coach
Kyle Smith, the Dons earned their 20th win of the season with a win at Pepperdine on Saturday, marking the program's first 20-win season since the 2013-14 season and third since 1985-86.
Â
USF and Santa Clara split two regular season meetings this season. The Broncos scored a 72-58 decision on Dec. 31 at the Leavey Center but the Dons bounced back with a 61-58 victory on the Hilltop on Feb. 9.
Â
Santa Clara leads the all-time series with USF, 113-107 and represents the Dons' oldest rival in terms of games played (220). USF has won 11 out of the last 16 and 12 of the last 18 in the series following a seven-game Santa Clara winning streak. The two schools have met seven times in WCC Championship play, with Santa Clara holding a 5-2 advantage.
Â
USF is 17-29 all-time in the WCC Tournament dating back to the first event in 1987. The Dons have reached the semifinals on nine occasions and have advanced to the championship game twice (1997 and '98), claiming its lone tournament title in 1998 with an 80-67 victory over Gonzaga. Last season, the Dons fell to Pepperdine, 90-86 in a quarterfinal game.
As part of the tournament festivities in Las Vegas, USF will host a pre-game tailgate two hours prior to select men's and women's basketball game during the tournament, that is open to all Dons fans. There will be complimentary appetizers and a cash bar. Tailgates will take place in the parking lot south of the Orleans Arena. Stay tuned for more information on the tailgate schedule.
