Know Your Dons: Sebastian Crookall-Nixon
Former USF golfer
Sebastian Crookall-Nixon has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2017 San Francisco City Golf Championships which will be held on Saturday at TPC Harding Park.
Â
Crookall-Nixon, a three-time first-team All-WCC selection who graduated from USF last spring, won three tight matches last weekend to earn a spot in the quarterfinals on Saturday against former Fresno State standout Justin Anthony, who recently regained his amateur status after stints on the Canadian and Golden State Tours.
Â
The Crookall-Nixon-Anthony quarterfinal match will tee-off at 7:52 a.m. with the winner advancing to the semifinals later in the day.
Â
The 36-hole final will be contested on Sunday beginning at 7:30 a.m. at TPC Harding Park.
Â
Crookall-Nixon, who was the fourth-lowest qualifier in the stroke play portion of the event, advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals after turning back three accomplished players last weekend.
Â
In the round of 64, the Englishman defeated Andy Zhou of Palo Alto, who plays collegiately at Harvard, 5 & 4. Crookall-Nixon then posted a pair of 2 & 1 wins over Stephen Sparolini, the 2004 SF City champion, and Max Ting of Atherton, who played in the 2013 Hong Kong Open as a 13-year old, to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. In the Ting match, Crookall-Nixon was down two holes after the 13th but then preceded to win the next four holes to close out the match on the par-3 17th.
Â
The San Francisco City Golf Championship, commonly known as "The City," is the oldest consecutively played golf competition in the world – 87 years and counting. All four professional major tournaments took time off during the war years, as did many other professional events. Former major championship winners Ken Venturi, Johnny Miller, George Archer, Bob Rosburg and Tom Watson took part in The City during the formative years of their careers, but only Venturi and Archer managed to win the championship.
Â
Venturi's 5 & 4 win over E. Harvey Ward in the 1956 championship match before 10,000 on-lookers at Harding Park is cemented in San Francisco golf lore.
