SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The San Francisco track and field team recorded a successful day with event victories, and personal and USF-bests on Saturday at Hornet Stadium.
"Overall we are pleased with our outdoor team opener," noted USF head coach
Helen Lehman-Winters. "We had multiple personal bests, a couple wins and a couple school records, but most importantly, everyone competed well and we got some work done today."
The record-breaking performances came from
Hugh Nicklason and
Asaundra Dalton. For Nicklason, the he bested his own record in the 800 meters by two-hundredths of a second and recording a third-place overall finish.
Dalton, a redshirt junior from Detroit, Mich., notched a new record for herself in the 400, bringing her tally to three (100, 200, 400 m). She surpassed Hillary Harris' previous best of 57.30 set March 2, 2013 by five hundredths of a second. Doubling up on the day, she came back to win her heat in the 200 in 25.02 seconds, earning sixth overall.
The event victories came with the double win in the men's and women's 1,500 meters.
Ryan Driscoll turned on the jets in the final 200 meters to cross the line in 3:48.73. Not only outpacing the competition in his heat, Driscoll's mark was tops out of the 83 competitors on the day.
Elena Burkard's race was never in question, as the senior from Baiersbronn, Germany, ran solo after the first lap and cruised to the victory in 4:22.83. Always a juggernaut in the middle distances, the women finished with four athletes in the top 10 overall, as
Weronika Pyzik,
Tatjana Schulte and
Magdalena Dias earned 3rd, 5th and 8th, respectively.
Numerous personal bests dotted the day, with
Skylar Fenton (100 m),
Emma Stahr (800 m),
Caleb McClain (1,500 m) and
Katoa Ahau (javelin) all recording new collegiate benchmarks for the Dons.
"We are looking forward to another couple weeks of training before things really begin to heat up competitively," added Lehman-Winters.
The Dons are back on the track at the close of the month, with athletes competing at the Stanford Invitational and San Francisco State Distance Carnival on March 31-April 1.
