SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco women's tennis team outlasted the Drexel Dragons to earn the 4-3 victory at The Olympic Club on Tuesday afternoon.
The Dons and Dragons were locked in a competitive match from the outset, with the visitors from Philadelphia nabbing the first point of the match on the doubles courts. Then, the top two women in the singles lineup eased to straight set victories to give USF the advantage on the day. First,
Emily Maxfield downed Kendra Bunch, 6-2, 6-3, on Court 2 and then No. 1 player
Genevieve McCloskey felled Honami Yazawa, 6-0, 6-4, on the Dons' home court.
Drexel evened the tally after taking the point at No. 5, and
Hanna Borjeson's 6-1, 7-6(4) win at No. 3 again edged the Dons back in front. After the Dragons earned the win on Court 6, it came down to a three-set battle at the No. 4 slot in the lineup.
Sophomore
Margarita Treyes was upended 6-0 in the first set of her match, but rallied for the 6-2 win in the second. The Guayaquil, Ecuador native, took the third set by a score of 6-3 to send the Dragons home empty-handed and halt a seven-match slide.
With the win, the Dons move to 3-11 on the season, while Drexel drop to 13-4 in dual match play.
"Everyone really played tough in singles all around," noted USF head coach
Hilary Somers. "We executed well. It was a good battle after having a tough weekend in the Pacific Northwest, and I hope we can use this momentum going into Friday and Saturday conference matches."
Next on the docket, the Dons take on two Bay Area foes at home. First up is a date with Saint Mary's on Friday at 11 a.m., before taking on Pacific on Saturday at 10:30 a.m., with both matches contested at The Olympic Club.
