BERKELEY, Calif. – The San Francisco track and field team turned in solid performances in sprints and javelin in their first time outdoors this season at the Cal Outdoor Opener at Edwards Stadium.
Two standout performers for the Dons were a pair of redshirt juniors,
Katoa Ahau and
Asaundra Dalton.
Ahau, a javelin thrower from Kaimuki, Hawaii, finished with the second-best distance of the day, less than a meter behind the event winner, Terrence Wilson of Cal. Ahau's hurl of 54.52 m came on his second attempt of the day, and is just over a foot off his collegiate best.
Dalton, a sprinter from Detroit, Mich., returned to the track for the first time since May 2015 and ran to a strong 2017 debut in both the 200 and 400 meters. The school record holder in the 200, Dalton was the third woman to cross the line in her heat with a time of 25.15 seconds.
In the 400, she raced to fourth in her heat with a mark of 57.41, a new collegiate best that is just 11 hundredths of a second away from USF record pace. Â Also running the 400, sophomore
Amy Glaser finished in 60.61, a new personal best for the native of Santa Rosa, Calif.
"It was fun to finally get on the track after a long season of fall and winter training," noted USF assistant coach
Travis Thompson. "We will now look to building upon this weekend in the weeks to come."
Next up for the team is a trip to UC Davis to compete in the Aggie Open on March 11. One day prior to that, USF's
Alex Short will compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas, as the first male to make a national finals field on the track.
