USF Finishes Eighth at Silverado

Final Team and Individual Results

NAPA, Calif. – If USF came to the Silverado Resort and Spa looking to build some momentum heading into next week's West Coast Conference Championships, the Dons might have caught lightening in a bottle after finishing eighth on one the strongest fields of the spring at the Silverado Showdown.

The Dons finished play today by turning in a 2-over 290 to go along with rounds of 301 and 287. At 878, USF finished 14-over par for the 54-hole event and was ahead of four top-50 teams, including San Jose State (39), Pepperdine (35), Texas Tech (36) and TCU (30).

Stanford claimed the team title with a 16-under score of 848, good for a nine-stroke win over UCLA, which finished at 7-under 857. UCLA's Lilia Vu and Hannah Kim of Northwestern shared medalist honors at 8-under 208, with Andrea Lee of Stanford finishing one off the pace at 7-under.

USF showed a 38-stroke improvement from last year's showing in this event, when the Dons finished tied for 16th place in an 18-team field.

"We got off to good starts in all three of our rounds and kept building on that momentum," said USF head coach Sarah Glynn. "We had one player under par each day and played the tournament I knew we were capable of playing at some point this season. It definitely comes at a good time with the WCC's next week in Provo."

Samantha Gong was the low Don on the leaderboard as the freshman tied for 13th place at even par 216. After a brilliant 67 on Monday, Gong shot a final round 74 to finish at just outside the top-10 in a stacked field.

"Sam is one of those players who can get on a roll in a hurry," said Glynn. "She drive the ball great all week and played with a lot of confidence. She felt like she was unstoppable."

Vanessa Ha shot a career-low round of 66 to move 38 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 21st place at 2-over 218. The junior birdied her first two holes of the day and was 5-under after nine holes. Her last birdie came on the par-5, fifth, her 16th of the day. Ha's bogey-free, 6-under round was matched by only one other player in the field, Cathleen Santoso of Oregon.

"I think Vanessa hit 17 greens today and when she does that, a low score will follow," said Glynn. "She's simplified her game a bit and was rewarded for her hard work today."

Ayaka Suzuki tied for 26th at 3-over 219 after a final round 75. The senior was 3-under on her round through 14 holes but played her last four holes at 6-over and had to settle for a 75.

Alison Lillie tied for 26th at 232 following her 82 on Tuesday.

Junior Kimberly Liu turned in a career-best 75 in her final round, making just three bogeys to go along with 15 pars.

USF will return to action next week when the Dons open play at the West Coast Conference Championships at Riverside Country Club in Provo.
