STANFORD, Calif. – The San Francisco track and field team recorded four more personal bests on the first day of the Cardinal Classic, highlighted by a pair of performances in the 5,000 meters.
The redshirt freshman from Buren, Germany, shaved off more than 25 seconds from her previous benchmark, taking 10th in the invitational section of the 5K at Cobb Track and Angell Field. Mobbed by her cheering teammates at the finish line, the performance was a bright spot of the night for the Dons.
Also competing at the 5,000 meter distance,
Ben Alcock turned in a personal best performance taking eighth in section 2 with a mark of 14:15.90.
"Tatjana was really impressive this evening," noted USF head coach
Helen Lehman-Winters after the race.
"We knew she was going to run fast, so we felt fairly confident that she was in a good place. She did a great job executing and she ran hard all the way to the finish line. Ben took a step forward this evening. He was a little bit tentative from 3K to 4K but it's coming together for him so I was pretty happy with that."
In the sprints, redshirt junior
Asaundra Dalton continues her steady performance. Dalton raced to first in her heat and third overall in the 200 meters, crossing the line in 24.56 seconds with a -0.2 wind in front of her.
"Every time Asaundra steps on the track and is able to win, it's going to be a step forward," said USF assistant coach
Travis Thompson. "She just needs to keep in going for the next couple of meets and maybe if we get a little bit of a tailwind she'll be able to break into the 23s. Our staff's goal is to have her be a regional qualifier and she's on the brink. She's probably got to run a tenth or two faster to secure a spot."
The Dons continue the weekend at Stanford on Saturday, with USF runners slated to compete starting at 4:59 p.m. Fans can watch the second day of action on FloTrack.
