STANFORD, Calif. –
Charlotte Taylor rewrote the record books on Friday at the Payton Jordan Invitational. Not only turning in a new school record best in the 5,000 meters, Taylor turned in the fastest NCAA time of the season under the lights at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Taylor, a senior distance runner from Spalding, England, rounded the track in the fastest heat of the night in 15:29.07. She was the only NCAA collegian in the field, taking 13th in a collection of athletes than included last year's NCAA champion Dominique Scott. Running for Adidas, Scott took eighth in the heat, just over five seconds faster than Taylor. The race was won by Ethiopian-Dutch runner Sifan Hassan, who used a 62-second final lap to cross in 15:13.15, just seconds off the Netherlands national record.
The run for Taylor was nearly 30 seconds faster than the previous school record, set earlier this season by teammate
Weronika Pyzik on this same track. Taylor's mark currently stands as the fastest in the NCAA, outpacing Furman's Allie Buchalski by more than six seconds. Along with her NCAA-best run in the 5K, Taylor also holds the second-fastest time in the 10,000 meters this season.
Along with Taylor's magnificent race, many other Dons were in action on the track, from sprints to middle distances and
Elena Burkard's fourth place finish in the 1,500 in 4:17.26 provided a solid start to the day's competition.
The Dons continue the weekend on Saturday with a contingent of racers slated to compete at the Oxy Invitational in Los Angeles.
