Chung Advances to Cal Am Quarterfinals

SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco soon-to-be senior Henry Chung advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 106th California Amateur Championship after knocking off Oregon's Norman Xiong on Thursday at The Olympic Club.

Xiong entered the championship week heavily decorated as a member of the victorious US team in the 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup. He can also boast recognition as the Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award, Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and 2017 Division I Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year semifinalist, but Chung was undaunted in his pursuit of advancing.

"Henry played fantastic today in every facet of the game," noted USF head coach and Chung's Thursday caddy Jack Kennedy. "Winning a match like that versus such a great player on such a difficult golf course should show Henry and his teammates that USF can compete with anyone in the country."

Chung, a native of Cerritos, Calif., edged to his first lead on the fourth hole of the day, after birdying the 417-yard Par 4, while Xiong only mustered bogey. Back-to-back birdies for Chung on Nos. 6 and 7 extended his lead to three, but Xiong rallied to cut the advantage back to one by the turn.

By the 11th hole, Chung capitalized on a bogie from Xiong to up the lead to two. His opponent from Canyon Lake, Calif., birdied the 16th to make a late rally to again slice into Chung's advantage, but the Don birdied the Par 5, 522-yard 17th to clinch the 2&1 victory to advance.

"I knew I had a tough opponent coming in today," reflected Chung. "My plan was to minimize my mistakes and capitalize on my opponent's mistakes. I knew he was a solid player with great accomplishments this spring, but that didn't make me nervous because of my course knowledge here at The Olympic Club."

Seeded 25th after the stroke play portion of the Championships, Chung downed No. 8 Daniel Connolly 1-up in the Round of 32, before the victory against Xiong. He will be looking for his third upset victory in the quarterfinals of the match play bracket.

The California Amateur Championship is one of the nation's oldest state amateur golf championships and dates back to 1912 when the California Golf Association was founded. The tournament has seen many top names take the title including Ken Venturi in 1951, Johnny Miller in 1968, Bobby Clampett in 1978/1980, Duffy Waldorf in 1984, and Mark O'Meara in 1979. Former Don standout Corey McEleya hoisted the trophy in 2013.

Chung advances to take on 16th-seeded Danny Ochoa of Carlsbad, Calif., who just completed his senior year at Southern California. Chung and Ochoa are slated to tee off from The Olympic Club on Friday at 7:30 a.m. The winner of the match will advance to face either San Diego State's PJ Samier or Franklin Huang of Stanford in Saturday's semifinals.
