Weronika Pyzik headlined the Dons on the track in Europe over the weekend, taking second at the 34th PZLA U23 Polish Championships in Suwalki on July 1.
Pyzik, a native of Bilgoraj, Poland, earned a silver medal in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:11.08, narrowly edged by Aleksandra Holda (17:10.10). Pyzik crossed the line 15 seconds ahead of the bronze medalist, Aneta Konieczek, to earn her second place spot on the podium.
A day after the Polish Championships concluded, Pyzik was tabbed to represent Poland at the 11th U23 European Championships at Zawisza Stadium on July 13-16. She ran the 5K standard and the fastest time for a Polish athlete this season at the Stanford Invitational, setting a then-school record of 15:59.00 on March 31.
"We are extremely pleased, but not at all surprised that Weronika will be representing her country in the U23 European Championships in a couple weeks," noted USF head coach Helen Lehman Winters. "The conditions at the Polish Championships were not ideal – rain and wind.  She was patient early and then took a risk and went for it the last two kilometers and came up just short of the win.  Tactically, this was a great race for her and she definitely has more in her in a couple weeks."
Also racing in the Polish Championships was teammate Madalena Dias, who earned seventh in the 5,000 meters, clocking in at 17:39.60. Doubling up on the day, Dias raced to ninth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:39.73.
Two men saw action in their country's championships as well, with
Ben Alcock and
Ryan Driscoll taking to the track at the British Athletics Time Trials held at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium.
Alcock, a senior from Bedford, England, rounded the track in 14:35.65 to take 16th in the 5,000 meters on July 1. USF's record-holder and recent graduate Driscoll lined up in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. The London native clocked in with a mark of 8:53.00 to earn a seventh place finish on the day.
The Dons will continue to dot meets across the globe all summer long, with
Emma Stahr (800 meters) and
Elena Burkard (1,500 meters) next to toe the line at the German National Championships July 7-9 in Erfurt.
