WBB | Coach Goodenbour's 50th Game Marked by Double OT Thriller

THE RUNDOWN
MALIBU, Calif. – In head coach Molly Goodenbour's 50th game coaching for the Dons, the University of San Francisco women's basketball team fell to Pepperdine, 92-95, in a double-overtime thriller in the Firestone Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. Coach Goodenbour's record now stands at 27-23, the winningest record for any women's coach on the Hilltop through 50 games.

The two team's began the contest trading buckets with the Waves, until Veronica Preciado checked in. The junior guard singlehandedly led the Dons on an 8-0 run. Altogether, USF finished the quarter on a 12-2 spree, 10 points contributed by Preciado. The Bay Area team had a 23-12 advantage headed into the second quarter.

The Waves hung with the Dons, each team scoring 21 points in the second frame, to enter locker rooms with a visitor lead of 44-33. The story of the first half was rebounding. The Dons brought in 26 boards to Pepperdine's 13.

Pepperdine surged back in the third quarter, quickly erasing the lead on an 11-4 run. With under two minutes to go in the third, the Waves closed the gap to six points, 54-48. On a three-point play, Pepperdine brought themselves within striking distance, 54-51. The Dons finished the quarter keeping the Waves at the same distance, 58-53.

Another big three-point play by Pepperdine brought the Waves within two, 62-60, with seven minutes to go. On their next possession, the Waves tied it up. With one made free throw at the 4:34 mark, the home team took the lead, 63-63, for the first time since the opening minutes. Meanwhile, Coach Goodenbour's squad was in a four-minute long scoring drought (0-5 field goals).

Anna Seilund finally responded for the Dons with a pull-up jumper from the free-throw line to take back the lead, 2:40 remaining in the contest. The Waves struck again, managing to stay out front by two points until there was only .7 seconds remaining in regulation. USF in bounded beneath the basket, straight to Michaela Rakova on the block who laid it up to even the score and send the contest to overtime.

The first overtime both teams scored nine points, gridlocked at 79-79, the five minutes resulted in another overtime. In the second overtime, the Dons struck first and narrowly led for nearly four and a half minutes. With 36 seconds remaining though, Pepperdine made its move, drilling a huge three pointer for a one point lead 91-90. Although Preciado hit a jumper to keep within one after a set of Pepperdine free throws, the Waves were sent to the line again, converting on both shots and putting the Dons down three with six seconds to go.

Unfortunately, the final USF play resulted in a turnover to give the Waves the victory.

ICYMI:
WHAT'S GOODenbour:
"It was a great game. Both teams gave a fantastic effort. It's hard to pour that much energy into a game and come up a little short, but I'm extremely proud of our effort. Right now, we have a limited roster and are in a tough stretch of travel, yet we still come out and battle every game. These kinds of experiences will help make us better and tougher for next time."

  • Preciado and Powell each added 16 points, while Kalyn Simon and Anna Seilund registered 14 a piece.
