THE RUNDOWN
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - In their second tournament in the spring, the University of San Francisco women's beach volleyball team notched their second win, but fell in the WCC/Big West Challenge Tournament. The Dons went 1-2, picking up their lone win against Sacramento State while taking losses against No. 6 Cal Poly and Cal State Northridge.Â
USF and CSUN co-hosted the one-day event on Main Beach in Santa Cruz, Calif. The tournament featured three WCC teams including USF, Pacific and Portland. It also included CSUN, No. 6 Cal Poly and Sacramento State. The Dons had duals against CSUN, No. 6 Cal Poly and lastly, Sac State.Â
Throughout the morning rounds of duals, USF picked up a single set win from
Carly Lowry and
Haley Howell in the 1's pairing versus CSUN, they fell in the flight however. In the final dual against the Hornets, Dons' pairs 1-4 swept each flight, recording victories to walk away with a single win.Â
THOUGHTS FROM FRANCISCO
"The Dons finished strong today. After two tough losses, we played consistently and with greater determination to win over the Hornets. Lowry and Howell once again clinched the win with their marathon set-two victory. Topor and Dalla Vecchia got their first win as the one pairs. Buvarp-Lavik and Araujo won at the three pairs and a new pair, Blackwell and Ronda, won at fours. Main Beach was a great venue for the WCC/Big West Challenge. We look to grow it next year."
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dons return to action on Saturday, March 17 when they take on Saint Mary's in Moraga, Calif. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m.
