Katie Van Bogaert Won Rifle Expert at Western Wildcat 6400 Prone Championship
March 30, 2006
(Phoenix, AZ) - Over Spring Break, Sophomore Katie Van Bogaert performed at an all time high at a match in Arizona. The competition was tough at the Western Wildcat 6400 Prone Championship, with one of the greatest shooting competitors, Lones Wigger, three previous Olympians and the current Gold Metal winner from Athens 2004, Matt Emmons. On the last day of competition Van Bogaert won the expert with a score of 1599 with 131 X's, earning her a master classification.
Each day of competition started at 9 AM and continued until approximately 2 PM at the world renowned Ben Avery Range. Each day the competitors shot sixteen twenty shot targets at distances of 50 meters, 50 yards, and 100 yards. Varying wind conditions proved to be quite a change for the shooter who has been training in gallery or indoor conditions. In spite of rain on the last day of competition Van Bogaert pushed through the challenges of cold and pain to place second in the 50 meter prone match, including firing her first career perfect target of 200x20 and an overall score of 400x36. Her total score for the match was a 6330x323.
"It was a difficult match to shoot, there just hasn't been much available for training, but with great coaching from both David Lee, Ed Knutson, and Dave Kimes I felt confident in my performance." Van Bogaert said. She is now training to compete in three state championships and an All American match over the summer.
