USF Track and Field Set To Compete In Jackie Joyner Kersee And Woody Wilson Invitationals

The track and field team will send a group of middle and long distance runners to the Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational at UCLA this Friday night and the rest of the team to the Woody Wilson Invite Saturday evening at UC Davis.
Competing for the men in the 1,500m at UCLA will be sophomore Alex Nelson, freshman Byron Williams ad junior Kenny Sparks, who won the 1,500m last weekend in the Johnny Mathis Invitational at San Francisco State. Freshman Micael Smith will run in the 800m and senior Ryan Courtwright will compete in the 5,000m, a race he placed sixth in last year.
For the women at UCLA, juniors Lucy Miller, Jennifer Hartford and Elizabeth Noey will compete in 5,000m. Hartford, who placed seventh last year in the Jackie Joyner Kersee 5k, is coming off a win in 1,500m last weekend at San Francisco State. Freshman Christine Jowaiszas will run in the 800m and senior Renee Stribling will race in the 1,500m.
"The Jackie Joyner Kersee Invite will give our athletes a great chance to compete against a high level of competition at the right time of the season," said head coach Helen Lehman-Winters.
In the Woody Wilson Invite the Dons will have sophomores Ashton LeSieur and Michelle Born compete in the women's 1,500m and 800m races. Last week at the Johnny Mathis Invite Born set personal records in both events and will look to improve again this weekend. Joining the sophomores in the 800m will be freshman Alice Hobbs who also set a personal record last weekend. Freshman Mary Verran will run in the women's 5,000m race as well, after winning her heat at the Johnny Mathis Invite with a new personal record.
For the men, senior Jorge Martinez and junior Jacob Marx will compete in the men's 1,500m race, freshman Matt Domenech will run in the 400m and freshmen A.J. Fabrizio and Alex Irani will compete in the shot put.
