The USF men's and women's track teams will be competing at Pepperdine on Saturday Feb. 24 beginning at 10 a.m. against West Coast Conference foes Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount, San Diego and the host Waves.
The meet will mark the first time in over 50 years that USF will be competing as an official men's track program and the first time ever that both an official men's and women's track team will be running together in the same competition. It will also give the coaching staff a chance to see how many of the new athletes on both teams can fair against competition from other WCC schools that are also in the beginning stages of starting a track team.
"This meet will give our teams a great chance to see how we compare against a large majority of the track programs in the WCC," said head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "The athletes are looking forward to getting started in competition for the 2007 track season against some very good runners throughout our conference."
Key competitors in the 3k for the Dons men will be senior Jorge Martinez, along with juniors Cheyne Inman, Ryan Courtwright, and Jacob Marx. In the 1500m the team is looking for strong performances from sophomore Alex Nelson and junior Kenny Sparks, along with freshman Byron Williams, who will be competing in his first competition wearing a Dons uniform. Nelson and Sparks will also compete in the 800m with freshman Micael Smith.
In the sprints the Dons are counting on points from freshman Matthew Domenech in the 400m, along with fellow freshman Marcus Terry in the 110m high hurdles.
On the women's side, juniors Lucy Miller, Jen Hartford and Liz Noey will be competing in the 3k. Senior Renee Stribling will double in the 1500m and the 800m races, where she will be joined by freshmen Christine Jowaiszas who is competing in the 800m.
In the sprints the Dons are hoping for a strong performance from freshmen Melissa Jones and Briana Junior, who will both be making their Dons debut.
The teams competing will be scored head-to-head against each other, making it the first WCC track competition ever that will be scored in that manner.
Other races that will be taking place include the distance medley relay and the 4x400m relay.
