The USF men's and women's track teams will travel to Stanford University to participate in their second competition of the year this Saturday at 12 pm. The Dons will compete against Stanford, Fresno State and UC Davis.
The women will be looking for a strong performance from senior Renee Stribling, who won both the 800m (2:20.57) and the 1500m (4:37.50) last weekend in the WCC track challenge, which was held at Pepperdine University. Stribling will be joined in the 1500m race by junior first team All-WCC cross country honoree Lucy Miller, who will be making her 2007 debut in the event. After placing second in the 3000m (10:24.29) last week in Pepperdine, Miller will also compete in that race this weekend. Joining her in the 3000m race will be juniors Jennifer Hartford (10:37.96) and Elizabeth Noey (10:38.88), who finished fourth and fifth in the same event in the WCC challenge.
Briana Junior, who won the 200m (28.05) last weekend, will be making her debut in the long jump and triple jump for the Dons. In high school, Junior was a three time state finalist in the triple jump, with her best finish coming in 2005 when she was sixth in the state of Washington. Competing in the long jump with Junior and making her USF debut will be Brynn Maurer, who will also be running in the 100m and 200m races.
On the men's side the team is looking for strong races in the 800m and 1500m events. Leading the men in both races will be junior Kenny Sparks, who placed second in the 1500m (4:01.35) and third in the 800m (1:58.02) last weekend in Pepperdine. He will be joined in the 1500m by first team All-WCC cross country honoree Ryan Courtwright, along with freshmen Micael Smith and Byron Williams, who placed fifth in the WCC challenge in the same event (4:04.30). Williams will be making his Dons debut in the 800m race and will be joined by Smith, who placed second (1:57.94) in the WCC challenge. The men will look to build off of the success from last weekend in the 800m, where they swept the event.
Alex Irani, who was a two time Serra League discus champion in high school for Mater Dei, will make his debut as a Don in both the discus and the shot put.
