The USF track teams traveled to Stanford University to take on UC Davis, Fresno State and Stanford in the Stanford quad meet this afternoon in their second meet of the season.
Junior Jennifer Hartford, coming off of a fourth place finish last week in the WCC challenge meet, won the women's 3000 meter race with a time of 10:11.23, which was a personal record for her by nine seconds.
"Jen did what she needed to do to win the race today," said head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "She ran a controlled race and kicked strong to the finish. She is right where she needs to be at this stage of the season. I am looking forward to her opening up at 5000 meters next weekend at the Aggie Open."
Junior Kenny Sparks set personal records in the 1500 (3:58.32) and 800 (1:56.47) meter races, where he placed fifth in both competitions against very deep fields. Also setting personal records in both the 1500 meters (4:58.68) and 3000 meters (10:32.16) was junior Elizabeth Noey.
In the men's pole vault, freshman Alex McIntosh set a school record by almost two feet with a vault of 13 feet nine inches, which put him atop the USF record books above John Harrison and Bob Breedlove who both vaulted 12 feet in 1934 and 1954. The men's quartet of Connor Chinn, Jamaal Myles, Joseph Harris and Matthew Domenech bettered the previous 400 meter relay record with a time of 45.69.
On the women's side, freshman Briana Junior set a new record in the triple jump with a mark of 10.64 meters, which was good enough for fourth place in the Stanford quad meet. She also broke the 2005 school record of 4.63 meters in the long jump with a mark of 4.77 meters. Also setting a new school record in 53.93 was the women's 4x100 meter relay composed of Christine Jowaiszas, Briana Junior, Brynn Maurer and Melissa Jones.
The track and field team will be back in competition next Saturday at the Aggie Open when they take on the largest field they have faced this year.
