The USF track and field teams traveled to Sacramento this weekend to compete in the Hornet Invite against teams from throughout California, Oregon, Nevada, Idaho and Washington.
In the men's 800m, the Dons had strong showings from all four participants. The top performance was a third place finish by sophomore Alex Nelson who set a new school record with a time of 1:53.31.
"Alex ran a very strong race," said head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "He won his heat dominating the race from 600 to the finish. He executed well and really stepped up a competitive notch today."
Also setting new personal records in the 800m were junior Kenny Sparks, who finished in 12th place with a time of 1:55.30, and freshmen Byron Williams (1:55.74) and Micael Smith (1:56.01).
In the women's 800m, senior Renee Stribling narrowly missed breaking her own school record by less than two tenths of a second when she ran a 2:14.48, which was good enough for a sixth place finish.
"Renee competed well today. She essentially matched her PR in a competitive field. She continues to execute race plans and take it all the way to the finish line."
Also setting new personal records on the men's side were freshmen Matthew Domenech in the 400m with a time of 51.90 and Alex Irani in the shot put with a throw of 12.72m.
On the women's side, junior Elizabeth Noey continued her strong season with another personal record in the 1500m with a time of 4:54.98. Also setting new personal records were freshmen Christine Jowaiszas who ran a 2:22.11 in the 800m, Alice Hobbs who ran a 19:26.11 in the 5000m and Melissa Jones in the 400m (1:01.66).
The Dons track and field team will be back in action next Friday and Saturday at the Stanford Invitational, one of the top college track meets in the country.
