The USF Track and Field teams will send a core of elite middle and long distance runners to the prestigious Stanford Invitational this Friday and Saturday in Palo Alto.
Competing for the Dons on Friday will be juniors Jennifer Hartford, Elizabeth Noey, and Lucy Miller in the 5000m, along with junior Kenny Sparks and sophomore Alex Nelson in the men's 800m. Nelson, who finished third last weekend at the Hornet Invite, while also setting a new school record in the 800m (1:53.31), will look to improve on his time while going against some of the best 800m runners in the nation.
On Saturday, Nelson and Sparks will return to the track, along with freshman Byron Williams, to compete in the men's 1500m race. Also competing that day in the women's 1500m will be senior Renee Stribling, who ran a personal record 4:33.64 in the 1500 three weeks ago at the Aggie Open. Stribling, who missed the school record by less than a second, will look to put her name at the top of the USF record list with a strong performance at Stanford.
The two-day competition will once again feature thousands of the top high school and college athletes in the United States. Competition begins on Friday at 8:45 a.m. with the women's 5000-meter run, while Saturday opens at 9 a.m. with the high school girls 400-meter dash. Past champions and meet record holders include Olympic Gold Medalists Gail Devers and Maurice Green. In 2006, the Stanford Invitational produced over 256 NCAA Division I automatic or regional qualifier times.
