Junior Renee Stribling and Alex Nelson both ran aggresive, strong races to set new school records in the men's and women's 1500m race Friday evening at UCLA in the Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational.
Stribling finished fifth in the 1,500 with a new personal record of 4:31.00, which beat the old school record of Jeannine Hagedorn by 1.88 seconds. Nelson was able to top the men's school record in the 1,500m by 4.10 seconds when he finished sixth in his race with a time of 3:52.55.
"Alex and Renee both ran very aggressive and strong races," said head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "There times came in very competive fields, I couldn't be more pleased that they were able to set the school records."
Also running well for the Dons in Los Angeles were juniors Jennifer Hartford and Elizabeth Noey in the womens 5,000m and freshman Byron Williams in the mens 1,500m. All three athletes set new personal records with Hartford running a 17:35.37, seven seconds faster than her old personal best and Noey running a 18:02.22, which shaved eight seconds off of her all time best. Williams finished 11th in mens 1,500m with a time of 3.58.32, topping his old time of 4:00.82.
At the Woody Wilson Invitational at UC Davis, the Dons got a strong performace from sophomore Michelle Born in the women's 1,500m where she finished sixth in 4:50.59.
