Dons Compete In Final Tune-up Before Independent Conference Championships

The USF track and field teams competed in their final tune-up before the Independent Conference Championships Friday afternoon at the Sacramento State Open.
Sophomore Alex Nelson continued his strong season with a victory in the men's 800m with a time of 1:54.73. Finishing behind Nelson in fifth place was junior Kenny Sparks (1:56.53) and freshman Micael Smith (1:57.37), who was sixth. In the men's 1500m junior Ryan Courtwright finished fifth for the Dons with a time of 3:58.53.
For the women, senior Renee Stribling finished third in the 1500m with a time of 4:36.19. Also in the 1500m, sophomore Michelle Born finished fifth with a personal record of 4:45.37. In the 800m, sophomore Ashton LeSieur also set a new personal record when she finished fourth with a time of 2:21.41. She was followed in sixth place by freshman Christine Jowaiszas, who missed her personal record by less than a second with a time of 2:22.83. Also placing well for the Dons was freshman Briana Junior, who was third in the women's triple jump with a mark of 10.19m.
Other Dons setting personal records in Sacramento were freshmen Jamaal Myles in the 100m with a time of (12.02), Alex Irani with a throw in the discus of 36.21 meters and junior Lucy Miller in the 3000m (10:22.02).
