USF Track And Field Teams Score Most Points In School History At Independent Conference Track Championship

The USF track and field teams concluded their seasons this afternoon with eighth place finishes in the Independent Conference Track Championship. The women's team scored 24 points and the men scored 20 points, both all time bests for both programs.
Leading the women were senior Renee Stribling and junior Jennifer Hartford. Hartford, who broke the school record while finishing fourth in the 10,000m Saturday night, finished fifth Sunday afternoon in the 5000m with a time of 17:56.47, earning a total of nine points for the Dons. Stribling, who was running in her last meet for the Dons, finished fourth in both the 800m (2:16.96) and the 1500m (4:36.50), earning ten points Sunday afternoon.
Other women scoring points for the Dons at the Conference Championship were freshman Briana Junior, who finished sixth in the triple jump with a jump of 10.57m and junior Lucy Miller, who finished seventh in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:23.03.
Leading the men were sophomore Alex Nelson and freshman Alex Irani. Nelson, who has put his name at top of the Dons school record list this season in both the 800m and 1500m, earned six points for the Dons when he finished third in the 1500m with a time of 3:52.66, missing his school record by .11 seconds. Irani scored a total of five points for the Dons by placing fifth in the shot put with a personal record throw of 13.55m and eighth in the discus with a throw of 38.63m, which was also a personal record.
Also scoring points for the men on Sunday were junior Kenny Sparks and freshman Micael Smith in the 800m. Sparks earned four points by finishing fifth with a time of 1:55.22 and Smith earned two points for the Dons by finishing seventh with a time of 1:57.52. Smith also ran on the eighth place 4x100m relay team that earned one point with freshmen Matthew Domenech, Joseph Harris and Jamaal Myles. That same team rounded out the scoring for the Dons by earning two points with a seventh place finish in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:31.58.
Other Dons who set personal records at the Independent Conference Championship were sophomore Ashton LeSieur and freshman Christine Jowaiszas in both the 800m and 5000m races, sophomore Michelle Born in the 1500m, and junior Elizabeth Noey and freshman Mary Verran in the 10,000m.
