Romo Runs To NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark
April 25, 2009
(Berkeley) - Jesus Romo of the USF Track and Field team became then second male in Dons' history to reach an NCAA Regional Qualifying mark Friday as USF competed at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Calif.
Romo ran a qualifying mark in the men's 3000 steeplechase, running the event in a time of 9:06.38. In the process, Romo also set a personal best time and a San Francisco school record. Last season, Alex Nelson became the first male to earn a qualifying mark for USF.
"Jesus is one of the most focused and dedicated athletes I have worked with," said USF assistant coach Tom Kloos. "It was great to see his hard work pay off."
In addition to Romo's new record, Alex McIntosh also set a new record for the Green and Gold. McIntosh set a school record and personal best in the pole vault with a mark of 15-1.
Other notables on the evening included Devin and Colin Hopkins running personal records in the 800, Thomas Estrada and Joshua Horeled posting personal bests in the 5000, and Sophia Ditty, Alice Hobbs and Amelia Holcombe running personal records in the women's 5000.
"We had some solid performances this evening," commented head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "Clearly the highlight was Jesus in the steeple, but I am please with the improvement and progress that so many of our athletes demonstrated on the track and in the field"
Competition for the Dons at the Brutus Hamilton continues Saturday. Highlighting the day for San Francisco includes Briana Junior in the triple jump and Byron Williams and Will Marquardt in the 1500.
