The USF Track and Field teams traveled to Sacramento State today to compete in the Hornet Invitational, the third meet of the season for the Dons. Junior Alex Nelson headlined for the Dons breaking his own school record in the 1500m with a time of 3:51.45.

Nelson posted a runner up finish in the field but was the top collegiate athlete. His 3:51.45 bettered his previous record of 3:52.55 which he set last year at the JJK/Rafer Johnson Invitational in mid April. "Alex continues to demonstrate that his ready to take a crack at the NCAA Regional standard when he gets in the right race" said Head Coach Helen Lehman-Winters. The NCAA Regional standard for 1500m is 3:47.80.

In women's competition, freshmen Nicole Bowler and senior Jennifer Hartford both turned in personal bests in the 1500m. Bowler was impressive placing third in 4:33.75, an eight second improvement over her last 1500m effort at Pepperdine earlier this month.

Hartford, stepping down from her typical 5000m specialty, raced to personal best while placing seventh with a time of 4:41.98.

Also running well for the Dons was senior Zita Mezei who finished fourth in the 800m in 2:15.18. Freshman Hannah O'Neal also ran well finishing 11th in 2:20.89. For the men, freshman Jesus Romo set a new school record in the 3000m steeplechase, in his first race in the event, with a time of 9:49.22.

In the field, junior Alex Delgadillo and freshman Alexander McHenry turned in a pair of personal bests in the javelin with throws of 165-11 and 150-04, placing 11th and 16th respectively.

Next up for the Dons is the Cal-Nevada Championships in Fresno and the San Francisco State Distance Carnival next weekend.
