USF Track And Field Wins Three Events At Johnny Mathis Invitational

The USF track and field teams competed at the Johnny Mathis Invitational Saturday at San Francisco State University. The women's team had first place finishes from juniors Lucy Miller in the 3,000m steeplechase (11:22.47) and from Jennifer Hartford in the 1,500m race (4:46.52), which was a new personal record. On the men's side junior Kenny Sparks won the men's 1500m race with a time of 3:58.72. In other men's action, freshman Micael Smith placed second in the men's steeplechase with a new school record of 9:56.61 and seventh in the 800m (1:58.20). Joining Sparks in the top five in the 1500m was junior Ryan Courtwright who placed fourth with a time of 3:59.77. Sparks also placed ninth in the 5,000m race with a new personal record of 15:05.50 and freshman Alex McIntosh placed third in the pole vault with a height of 4.10m. For the women, sophomore Michelle Born placed third in the women's 1500m (4:47.58) and sixth in the 800m (2:20.98), which were both personal records. Also setting new personal records in both of her races was freshman Alice Hobbs who ran in the 800m (2:27.59) and the 1500m (5:03.68). Freshmen Christine Jowaiszas in the 1,500m (4:53.64) and Mary Verran in the 5,000m (18:44.10) also had personal records for the Dons.
