Head cross country and track coach Helen Lehman-Winters announced the hiring of Anton Alves, who begins his first season as Assistant Track coach in 2008-09 and will work primarily with the throwers. The Redding, CA native earned his Bachelor's Degree from Chico and his Master's in Kinesiology from Cal Poly. Alves spent time coaching and Cuesta Community College (2008) and Chico State (2004-05). He holds a USATF Level I Certification and is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. "Anton not only brings tremendous technical knowledge to our program but he is passionate about coaching," said head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "I am confident that he has the ability to build a solid throws program here at USF. We look forward to continued development in this area." As an athlete, he was a Division I All-American in the discus, placing third at the 2002 NCAA Championships. His personal best throw in the discus is 179' 5". I'm excited to be given the opportunity to become the next throws coach at USF," said Alves. "I look forward to helping the team to success and uphold the rich athletic history at USF."
