Cross Country Teams Finish Fifth at Hornet Jamboree

(Sacramento, CA) - Both the men's and women's cross country teams finished fifth at the 2009 Sacramento State Hornet Jamboree at Granite Regional Park on Saturday morning. Freshman Sahar Bala led the women's team, while freshman Adrian Rafiee led the men.
Women's 5k: Bala's time of 18:33 in the 5k race was a personal best, and she led the team, finishing 19th overall. Also running a personal best was freshman Alice Baker, who came in 30th in 18:57. Junior Christine Jowaiszas ran 19:19, placing 41st and sophomore Carly Holman finished 44th in 19:26. Rounding out the Dons five was sophomore Hannah O'Neal, who took 57th in 20:00 flat.
UC Davis took the overall team title, with 34 points, followed by Cal at 64. Sacramento State was third at 65, and Santa Clara finished fourth with 94. USF rounded out the top five with 154 points. Santa Clara's Stephanie Wilson took first in 17:23.
Men's 4 Miles: Rafiee finished 14th overall in his Dons debut at 20:32. Junior Joshua Horeled finished second for the Dons, coming in 20th in 20:40. Sophomore Tyler Alvarez came in 24th in 20:46, and sophomore Steven Garboden ran 20:51, finishing 27th. Rounding out the Dons top five was sophomore Thomas Estrada, who ran 20:51, finishing 28th. Sophomore Colin Hopkins finished 31st in 20:54 and sophomore Michael Barnes finished 36th in 21:02. Freshman Jason Waldram finished 46th in 21:12 and junior Byron Williams finished 61st in 21:46.
UC Davis also took first in team standings (23), followed by Sacramento State (72), California (81), Santa Clara (100), and the Dons finished out the top five at 111. UCD's Jon Davis finished first overall in 19:34.
USF returns to action on Saturday, September 19 at San Diego State.
