(Eugene, OR) - San Francisco women's cross country finished 10th at the 2009 NCAA Western Regionals, while the men took 19th at Springfield Country Club in Eugene, OR on a cold and muddy Saturday morning. The 10th place showing is the highest ever for the women's program.

Women's 6k: Freshman Heather Zytkewicz led the Dons, finishing 40th in 22:00.95, followed by sophomore Hillary Kigar, who took 49th in 22:09.60. Freshman Eva Krchova came in 59th in 22:23.73, and junior Nicole Bowler finished 80th with a time of 22:43.09. Freshman Alice Baker finished 88th in 22:49.59, and freshman Chloe Treleven came in 115 in 23:10.10.

Finishing 10th, the Dons (304) defeated West Coast Conference foes Loyola Marymount 13th, 334), Portland (16th, 420), Santa Clara (19th, 500), San Diego (22nd, 616), and Pepperdine (25th, 742).

Kendra Schaaf of Washington took the overall win, finishing in 20:41.70 and leading the Huskies to a first (25) place team finish. Oregon (66) came in second, followed by Stanford (94) in third.

"I am so proud of how our women competed in a very competitive field," said head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "The western region is loaded and this young team approached this race like veterans. Both Heather and Hillary mixed it up in the front pack early in the race and ran themselves into solid spots. However, we needed to pack it in better in our three-four positions. Nicole struggled with some back issues and just could not get it going on the soft muddy course. Alice Baker once again showed what a tough racer she is and rounded out our scoring five. Considering the muddy conditions and the level of experience of this squad, we are pleased with the results and excited about what we can do in the future."

Men's 10k: Sophomore Ganbileg Bor earned the top spot for the Dons men, finishing 83rd in 32:50.40. Sophomore Jeremy Grace came in 108th with a time of 33:23.14, followed by junior Josh Horeled, who finished 116th in 33:30.79. Senior Alex Nelson finished 117th in 33:30.93, and junior Ravi Amarawansa came in 123rd with a time of 33:39.44. Sophomore Will Marquardt finished 133rd in 33:54.62, followed by sophomore Devin Hopkins in 152nd with a time of 24:32.43.

USF (522) finished 19th defeating WCC foes Pepperdine (22nd, 698), Saint Mary's (25th, 713), and San Diego (26th, 741).

Chris Derrick of Stanford finished first overall in 30:38.84, leading the Cardinal (27) to a first place team finish. Portland (84) came in second, followed by Oregon (109) in third.

"The men's results were obviously not what we had expected today, said Lehman-Winters. "Our squad just did not come together and get it done. We lost several people to injuries this season and their absence really showed in the results today. It is unfortunate, as we are a much better team than the results indicate. We just have to come back in the spring and next fall and prove it."

At-Large berths are available for the NCAA Championships, held in Terre Haute, IN at the La Vern Gibson Course. The meet is scheduled for November 23rd.
