(San Francisco, CA) - University of San Francisco runners started off the season on a high note, as both the men's and women's teams finished the San Francisco Invitational in second place. The dual second place finishes are the best for both teams since the 2006 season when the men won the race, and the women were runners-up. For the women, senior Michelle Born was the top finisher, coming in second at 18:03.10. Sophomore Nicole Bowler rounded out the top ten in the women's race at 18:36.80. Freshman Sophia Ditty finished 16th (18:52.80), junior Mary Verran came in 20th (18:59.00), and freshman Hillary Kiger rounded out USF's top five, finishing 32 (19:31.40) Stanford's Alicia Follmar won the race in 17:57.90. As a team, Cal women won the invite with 52 points. USF finished with 80, followed closely by third place finisher Santa Clara at 81. Stanford, defending NCAA Champions, finished fourth with 100 points. In the men's race, USF's top finisher was freshman Ganbileg Bor (8th/25:46.30). The next four Dons all finished in the top 20. Freshman Jeremy Grace finished 11th at 25:58.80, redshirt sophomore Byron Williams finished 14th in 26:05.70, sophomore Jesus Romo (26:07.00) and freshman William Marquardt (26:09.10) came in 16th and 17th respectively, and rounding out the Dons top five was freshman Thomas Estrada (20th/26:17.60). Freshman Edwin Kibet Tarragon from Academy of Art University won the men's race in 25:07.30. Stanford won the team race with 24 points and all five runners finishing in the top seven spots. The Dons were second with 66 points, followed by Cal at 105. Santa Clara took fourth with 117 points. Next up for the Dons is the Sacramento State Open on September 13 at Granite Regional Park.
