Jon Norfolk enters his third year as an assistant baseball coach at the University of San Francisco. He serves in a variety of roles; working mainly with the hitters and catchers. He assists with catcher strength and conditioning program, maintaining field duties, coaching first base and tracking academic progress.
Working with the catchers, Norfolk played a major role in developing Ryan Lipkin’s game-management skills. Lipkin was drafted in the 23rd round of the 2010 Major League Amateur Draft. Under Norfolk’s guidance, Lipkin proved to be one of the country’s most complete catchers. Lipkin was a semi-finalist for the 2010 Johnny Bench Award, given annually to the nation’s top collegiate catcher.
During the summer of 2010, Norfolk served as head coach at IMG’s world premier high school wooden-bat league in Bradenton, Fla. The league aims to improve athletic and game advancement through an international forum with players competing from all across the world.
Norfolk is no stranger to the Hilltop, as he was a catcher for the Dons from 2002-07. Most remember Norfolk for smashing the winning two-run homerun with two outs in the ninth inning of his final game in 2007. The homerun gave USF an 11-10 victory over Saint Mary's. As a Don, Norfolk batted .388 with 111 hits (17 doubles, one triple, and four homeruns), 27 RBI, and started 108 of 164 games played.
Born and raised in Riverside, CA, Norfolk earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from USF in 2007 and his Master's Degree in Organization and Leadership in 2008. He served as the Assistant Academic Advisor for the Athletic Department during the 2007-08 school year.
